What is a Gum Disease?
Periodontal disease, more commonly known as gum disease, is a severe infection that develops in the gums and contributes to tooth loss. In fact, it is one of the leading causes of adult tooth loss, as patients are often unaware of the disease until it is too late. If you would like to prevent gum disease and potential tooth loss, we recommend seeing your Miami Beach dentist as soon as possible.
At Bal Harbour Smiles, we will check for early signs of periodontal disease at your regular checkup by evaluating your gum line and the spaces between your teeth. The primary symptoms of gum disease are receding gums and declining bone levels in your jaw, caused by plaque buildup that is not properly removed through a regular dental hygiene routine.
Gum disease develops in two stages, gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is an early stage, which your dentist can easily detect and reverse through appropriate treatment, usually involving non-surgical options. If left untreated, a severe stage known as periodontitis will set in, permanently damaging the gums and loosening your teeth. This stage cannot be reversed, but it can be treated through periodontal and laser gum surgery and/or dental implants.
Common causes of periodontal disease include but are not limited to:
- Smoking or chewing tobacco
- Severely crooked teeth
- Old fillings
- Improperly fitting bridges
- Some medications – anti-epilepsy drugs, cancer therapy drugs, calcium channel blockers, etc.
Gum disease is a serious dental problem, yet prevention methods are quite simple. In most cases, all you have to do is brush and floss regularly, eat a healthy diet, and see your dentist for bi-annual checkups and cleanings.
